Annual Big Town Read author announced for 2018

Sunday, May 20th, 2018

As part of its aim to bring the best in good writing to the town, every year Marlborough LitFest, in partnership with The Reading Agency, along with the support of local libraries, choose a novel which is suggested for local book groups and individuals to read, ahead of the author appearing at LitFest.

The Big Town Read author for 2018 is Chris Cleave with his novel, Everyone Brave is Forgiven, a historical novel set in London and Malta during WWII. Based on the experiences of his grandparents – in particular the real-life love letters between them – this book is a departure for the novelist, who is known for his acclaimed debut, Incendiary (narrated by a widow who lost her husband and child in a terror attack) and his novel, Gold, published on the eve of London 2012, recounting the story of three cyclists preparing for the Olympic Games.

This event has proved popular with audiences – particularly local book groups – who enjoy the group discussion feel of the event and the ability to have a Q&A session with the author. Previous Big Town Read authors have included Laline Paull, Sathnam Sanghera, Jackie Kay, Rachel Joyce and Elizabeth Buchan. Free copies of the novel will be available from Marlborough Library during the summer; in previous years, readers have returned their copies to the Library for others to read after them.

Chris will be appearing at 5pm on Sunday 30 September at Marlborough Town Hall. The Box Office opens on 11 July.

The Reading Agency is the leading charity inspiring people of all ages and backgrounds to read for pleasure and empowerment. Genevieve Clarke, Programme Manager said: “We’re all about encouraging people to share their enjoyment of reading so it’s a pleasure to be involved with the annual Big Town Read. Chris Cleave will be a perfect fit as he loves to debate with his audience.”

Kay Newman of Marlborough LitFest said: “The Big Town Read is such a special event as it gives everyone the rare chance to read a book well in advance, with friends, and then come together to the LitFest and talk to the author. Chris Cleave will be a brilliant Big Town Read author. He is charming, fun, and just loves talking to people about his work.”
