Paulo Scott’s Nowhere People

Saturday, September 27th, 2014

Straight off of the train, fresh from London the Brazilian author Paulo Scott talks about his book Nowhere People with the help of his publisher Stefan Tobler and translator Daniel Hahn.

Scott read a passage from the novel in the original Portuguese, before Daniel Hahn kindly translated into English for the audience. We got to experience the beauty, rhythm and musicality of the text in the original language, but there were audible sighs of relief from the audience when Hahn offered to translate into English.

The session also discussed the problems and challenges surrounding translation of text which stays true to the author’s original, as well as looking at And Other Stories, Tobler’s publishing company that dedicated itself to bringing translations to a UK audience.
