Marlborough’s 2016 Big Town Read Author Announced for World Book Night
Thursday, April 21st, 2016
Back by popular demand, Marlborough LitFest in partnership with The Reading Agency and World Book Night (23 April) have unveiled their ‘Big Town Read’ author for 2016’s line-up – Elizabeth Buchan – for the 30 September-2 October festival.
Following in the successful footsteps of previous LitFest Big Town Read authors Sathnam Sanghera, Jackie Kay and Rachel Joyce, this year local book groups were asked for their input into choosing the 2016 author. Elizabeth Buchan was eventually chosen from a shortlist as her latest novel I Can’t Begin to Tell You also appears on this year’s World Book Night list. Marlborough LitFest and The Reading Agency with the support of local libraries are encouraging local book groups and individuals to read Elizabeth’s book in advance of her appearance at the LitFest in October so that the audience can discuss it in a Q&A session with the author. Elizabeth will appear at the LitFest on Sunday 2 October at 4.15pm at Marlborough Town Hall.
I Can’t Begin to Tell You is the latest novel by Elizabeth Buchan, set in wartime Europe involving a heroine drawn into a covert world of resistance with the British Intelligence and London’s code breakers. As well as novels, Elizabeth’s short stories have been broadcast on Radio 4; she regularly reviews for the Sunday Times and Daily Mail, has chaired literary prizes as well as being a judge on the Costa Book Awards.
World Book Night, now in its sixth year, is an annual celebration of reading and books run by The Reading Agency – the charity with a mission to inspire more people to read more, encourage them to share their enjoyment of reading and celebrate the difference that reading makes to all our lives. Every year on 23 April, volunteers give away hundreds of thousands of books from a selected list of titles in their communities to share their love of reading and encourage those people who don’t read for pleasure or own books.
Genevieve Clarke, Programme Manager at The Reading Agency said: “Elizabeth Buchan is a great supporter of our work and of spreading the word about the power of reading to change lives. We’re delighted that I Can’t Begin to Tell You will be this year’s Big Town Read at Marlborough LitFest as well being one of our titles for World Book Night.”
First confirmed authors for Marlborough LitFest 2016 include: Michael Morpurgo, author and historian Tom Holland and bestselling international crime writer, Peter James. Other authors include Sally Nicholls, Jessie Burton, Ben Rawlence, Harry Parker and Guy Burgess biographer, Andrew Lownie for the weekend of 30 September – 2 October, 2016.
The programme is still being put together but in its seventh year Marlborough LitFest will offer a mix of fiction, non-fiction, new and young emerging authors, poetry and children’s events as well as an event to mark the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death. LitFest aims to bring the best of writing, both new and established, to Marlborough.
The Marlborough LitFest committee would like to thank its Founder Sponsor ALCS Authors’ Licensing and Collecting Society, lead sponsor Brewin Dolphin and events sponsors Hiscox Insurance, and Duncan Morris Solicitors for their continued support.
