Will Self – Phone

The Golding Speaker
“I don’t really write for readers”
Will Self has described being a writer as a privilege and a delight but he has no audience in mind. Although highly entertaining, when asked whether his glass is half full or half empty the answer is neither, but a glass which has the bottom broken.
He is author of more than twenty books including novels, short stories and non-fiction. In 2008 he won the Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize and his recent novel Umbrella was shortlisted for the Man Booker. His latest, Phone, is a satirical examination of how we have become constrained by the very technologies that promised us liberation. In the tradition of Dickens and others, his work is frequently inspired by long walks in and out of the urban landscape, perhaps also to clear his mind of the prison of screen-based technology.
Will is equally known as a journalist, having written for The Times, Evening Standard and The Observer. His intellect is rarely doubted and will be familiar to viewers of Question Time, Have I Got News For You and Newsnight as well as to Radio 4 listeners. With no audience in mind he clearly enjoys a large one in practice.
