Tim Dee – Ground Work
September 29 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm£10.00
“We are living in the Anthropocene, an epoch where everything of Earth’s current matter and life…
is being determined by the ruinous activities of just one soft-skinned, warm-blooded, short-lived pedestrian ape.”
So says Tim Dee in the introduction to Ground Work: Writings on People and Places, in which 31 of the best-known authors writing about the natural world muse on subjects as diverse as the cuckoo, fossil hunting and the watercolour drawings of John Aubrey.
Author, radio producer and birdwatcher, Dee describes his life as a “wordy-birdy” one: in addition to many articles, essays and reviews, he has written The Running Sky: A Bird- Watching Life (2009) and Four Fields (2013), an account of four fields in Cambridgeshire, Zambia, Montana and Chernobyl and the light they shed on man’s relationship with nature.
The inspiration for his latest book is Common Ground, a charity that seeks imaginative ways to engage people with their environment and that includes community orchards among its projects. The LitFest hopes Dee has time to cast an eye over Marlborough’s very own – and very fruitful – town orchards.
