Nikesh Shukla – The Good Immigrant
October 1, 2017 @ 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm£10
‘Immigrants steal women, jobs and benefits and are bad until they prove their worth to society. Only if they win an Olympic gold medal, a bake-off challenge or become a doctor do they become a ‘good immigrant’.’
The Referendum result seems to have given permission to people who hid under ‘Political Correctness Gone Mad’ a licence to tell immigrants to go home. The Good Immigrant is based on such a premise.
Nikesh Shukla has collected and edited this new book of essays by 21 British writers of colour discussing race and immigration in the UK. Some are hilarious, others will make you angry and embarrassed. It was shortlisted for Book of the Year at the British Book Awards.
Nikesh’s debut novel, Coconut Unlimited, shortlisted for the Costa First Novel Award, was described as ‘a riot of cringeworthy moments…made real by Shukla’s talent for teen banter’. He co-wrote Generation Vexed: What the Riots Don’t Tell Us About Our Nation’s Youth and his second novel Meatspace has been highly lauded in the media. Nikesh’s writing has featured in The Sunday Times and the Guardian, BBC Radio 4 and BBC2.
Coco Khan is a Guardian columnist and one of the essay contributors.
