Keggie Carew – Dadland
September 30 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm£10
Sponsored by Hiscox
‘I’m sorry Keggie was not at school today. She had a bad hangover.’
Tom Carew never let rules get in the way, especially when they contradicted common sense – his own common sense, that is. Perhaps this gave him an extra edge as an SOE officer in World War II. Surprise, Kill, Vanish. This was the motto of Operation Jedburgh which saw the 24 year old Tom Carew parachute into Nazi-occupied France under cover of night. Having worked with the French Resistance, including an escape through a sewer, he won the Croix De Guerre. Months later he was helping the Burmese guerrillas to thwart the Japanese forces.
Dadland is a highly accomplished and moving account of a courageous, maverick father, as well as Keggie Carew’s own experience of family life. It’s also one which nearly didn’t happen. As Keggie sadly observed her father’s memory fading, following a series of strokes and the onset of dementia, completing the book became a race against time. Tom was losing his past as Keggie was frantically trying to rebuild it.
Dadland won the Costa Award for Best Biography in 2016.
