Kayo Chingonyi – Kumukanda
September 28 @ 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm£10
Sponsored by Marlborough College
Zambia to England. Newcastle. London, Sheffield, Essex. Kayo Chingonyi is a poet for whom location exists in language. He was recently introduced on Ian McMillan’s Radio 3 poetry programme as ‘an up and coming star’ and his debut collection Kumukanda has been described as ‘a brilliant debut – tender, nostalgic and at times darkly hilarious.’
Activity, trains, accents, crossing places – these are all inspirational. The multiple frames of reference which shape Kayo’s work are evident in his musical tastes which unabashedly range from Dolly Parton to Wookie. Drawing on literary theory, hip hop, contemporary British and American poetry, sampling and music production he is interested in the intersection of oral and written traditions.
He is joined at Marlborough LitFest by the wonderful dancer and choreographer Sean Graham. It is a scintillating collaboration exploring Chingonyi’s central themes: the transition between two worlds, ancestral and contemporary; between the living and the dead; between the gulf of who he is and how he is perceived. Underpinned by a love of music, language and literature, here is a powerful exploration of race, identity and masculinity celebrating what it means to be British and not British, all at once.
