John Boyne – The Heart’s Invisible Furies
October 1 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm£10
Sponsored by Hiscox
The sin of teenage pregnancy. A girl is shamed in front of her family and the congregation. She is kicked out of the church.
The Heart’s Invisible Furies is only Boyne’s second novel about Ireland. However, the Emerald Isle has been on an incredible journey and it’s amazing to think that homosexuality was illegal there little over 25 years ago. The wounds of the past are still sore for Boyne, having rejected the church with vehement rage as a teenager.
John Boyne is best known for The Boy In Striped Pyjamas, which has sold over nine million copies and was made into a successful feature film. He has also written ten novels for adults but isn’t keen to differentiate between audiences. As he says, Treasure Island isn’t a children’s book or an adult book, it’s just a book. He was born in Ireland, in 1971, and studied English Literature at Trinity College, Dublin and Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia.
In 2012, Boyne was awarded the Hennessy Literary ‘Hall of Fame’ Award. He has won three Irish Book Awards, the Que Leer Award in Spain and the Gustav Heinemann Peace Prize in Germany.
John Boyne will be in conversation with Tony Mulliken, Chairman of Midas PR.
