Jane Austen – A Performance

October 1, 2017 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

‘The person, be it gentleman or lady, who has not pleasure in a good novel, must be intolerably stupid.’

Several of us at LitFest would concur. Jane Austen, one of our greatest and most-loved writers, lived some 50 miles from here, in the Hampshire countryside. LitFest will recreate Jane with drawing-room intimacy on your doorstep here in Marlborough, courtesy of Stephen Siddall (director) and an acclaimed actress.

The dialogue consists entirely of Austen’s own words via extracts from her letters, novels and juvenilia, all celebrating the wit and variety of her lively mind. Much of her perceptive and satirical observation on the social life of English country houses is captured.

Stephen Siddall was Head of English at The Leys School Cambridge, He has directed work for BBC2 as well as 15 Renaissance plays for the university and city at the Cambridge Arts Theatre. For The Horseshoe Theatre Company Stephen has successfully put on Ibsen’s A Doll’s House and Beckett’s Waiting for Godot. He recently devised and directed The Monarch of Wit, a celebration of the life and writings of John Donne.
